Brandon, Florida is one of the so-called "bedroom communities" surrounding the great metropolitan area of Tampa. Established in January 1867, it was John Brandon who, with his wife and sons, came to Fort Brooke from Mississippi and bought 40 acres of land. He then went on to buy an additional 160 acres. He named the area after himself, giving Brandon's modern name to the city. The city initially centered around the Victorian home of Brandon and the nearby New Hope Church. The church has also served for a number of years as the first school of the area. Once the Florida Central Railroad arrived in the area, the city saw growth. Brandon's residents agreed to build a train depot on Moon Street.
By the early 1960s, the city remained largely tied to agriculture. The Brandon Chamber of Commerce was then established to help establish and encourage business growth. The population of the city was about 8,000 at this time, and estimates from that time suggest that about one new family moved into the city limits every month.The first shopping mall was built around this time. In the early 1960s, once again embracing the nickname of the area, Brandon Center was designed and opened for business. With families moving to the area, it was decided that the Kingswood Elementary School, the Brandon Public Library and several housing developments and golf courses should be established. Because of the weather at this location in Florida, sunshine and humidity were found to be beneficial to golf, and this, along with other businesses, helped the city see even more growth. Rapid growth came to Brandon in the 1970s, and traffic congestion happened for the first time with it. Now that the city had over 400 businesses, and in less than a 10-mile radius, the population had swelled to over 40,000 citizens. A new hospitaland cultural center was built in the mid-1970s along with this new population explosion.
During the 1980s, Brandon experienced another surge in growth. The southernmost area was quickly filled with new families and individuals who had chosen to call their home town. Interstate 75 started to harden the area in 1986; the advent of the new Interstate and its traffic allowed the city to expand to nearly 60,000 by 1990. Although a small city in comparison to Tampa or Miami, Brandon does lay claim to fair share of citizens who have gone on to become famous.
